Alcohol Will Ruin Your Sleep

Eric D. on 9th Sep 2019

Hi guys, this is Eric from DubsLabs and welcome to another episode of Sleep Hacks. Today, I wanted to talk to you about a very important sleep hacky topic, alcohol.

Here's the thing about alcohol. I've talked to so many people, especially back when I lived in New York City, who swear that alcohol helps them fall asleep faster. You know what? I can't deny that. It's true. I don't really consume much alcohol anymore these days but back when I did, I did notice that I would fall asleep really quickly.

Here's the catch though. When you drink alcohol, while the alcohol is in your system, it stops your body from going into REM sleep, which is the most restful state of sleep. We need it for a whole multitude of reasons that I won't get into because I'm trying to keep this video very short. But, basically, REM sleep is very important. Here's what happens. While your body's processing the alcohol, you won't go into REM sleep. When your body is done processing the alcohol, you will actually go into longer phases of REM sleep to make up for all the REM sleep that you lost while you were processing the alcohol and that sounds great, right?

But unfortunately, alcohol also disrupts a whole bunch of other functions in your body that are important for good night's sleep. So overall, your sleep on average if you go to sleep after drinking is going to be much lighter than it would be if you had say, gone to bed after drinking a nice alcohol-free bedtime tea. I know this isn't really advice that people want to hear. People love to drink. I get it but, if you can try to stop drinking and be completely 100% sober by the time you go to bed, you'll get a much better night's sleep and your body will thank you.

So that's all I have for today. Hope you enjoyed this video. Please subscribe and talk to you soon. Thank you.
