How Snoring Affects Your Sleep

Alexa L. on 9th Sep 2019

Hello and welcome back to Sleep Hacks. I'm Alexa from DubsLabs and today we're going to be talking about what snoring means to your sleep and overall health. Have you given or received a loving, but slightly irritated nudge in the middle of the night? Well, snoring is reportedly experienced by half of the population with habitual snores making up about 20% of women and over 40% of men. So, what causes you to snore in the first place? Well, it ranges from congestion, from allergies, or sickness, alcohol consumption, and even genetic factors like enlarged tonsils.

Snoring is often a nuisance but there are more serious cases that should be checked out by medical professional to rule out sleep apnea. If you experience excessive daytime sleepiness even with enough sleep, daytime headaches, or even choking during sleep, you may have sleep apnea and should talk to your physician about exploring these issues and possible solutions.

For snoring that occurs regularly but isn't related to sleep apnea, there are a few fixes that you could try. Sometimes it's as simple as sleep position. I know that I myself am guilty of snoring a little bit if I fall asleep on my back and I think that's the case for a lot of people. You'll want to try at least falling asleep on your side and seeing if that makes a difference and how you feel and how you sound throughout the night. Another potential solution is diet and exercise. Excessive weight can often be the culprit for snoring and you'll benefit in more way than one from trying to change your lifestyle for the better.

Last but certainly not least, our oral appliances, similar and looked to a mouth guard. Maybe not the most stylish accessory, but I think anyone with an earshot will think that it's worth it. These appliances serve to keep your tongue and jaw in place so your airway is clear, and you're able to stay asleep and maybe keep the person beside you asleep as well.

All right, I hope you were able to get some good information on what your snoring could mean and how you can get quality sleep while keeping everyone's ears happy.
